5.5.3 Hear Phonetic Names After A Pause

M-x emacsvox-delayed-phonetic-mode toggles delayed phonetics. With it enabled, character movement speaks the letter normally, then a pause gives its phonetic name, such as "alpha" for "a". These are the English names also used by C-e c.

The mode starts enabled with a one-second delay. Customize emacsvox-delayed-phonetic-delay to another positive number of seconds and save the mode preference through Customize. The menu at C-e H s t also exposes delayed phonetics and its global delay, using a minimum 0.1 seconds for numeric entry.

Further input, including the first key of a prefix, cancels the pending name. New speech, stopping speech, edited source text, or leaving its buffer/window also prevents stale feedback. Each pause produces at most one name. Typing, deletion, punctuation, and explicit phonetic reading do not trigger the delay.
