8.5.2 Guided Change This Feedback

  1. Move to an item and press C-e H f c to capture Current item. For earlier feedback, open C-e H f h, select a record, and press C. A multipart record expands numbered parts in playback order. Move with n~/~p to hear text in captured voices, O to replay the part, and RET to choose it. Truncated history cannot provide a complete original/proposed comparison.
  2. Press c to expand component changes and RET on a choice. Content voice expands named voices, identifies original and replacement, and lists the original first when available, then alternatives alphabetically. Selecting a voice with RET keeps the panel open for comparison. Changes can add a cue, tone, or spoken label, replace a sound, change a tone, or suppress a component. A cue can be added when none existed. Choices depend on integration facts; they cannot create missing semantic distinctions.

RET on Parts reopens the parts; each retains its unfinished choices. q goes up one level, for example from a voice to Content voice and then Change. The section closes and its parent’s name and state are announced through the configured cues and labels. At the top, q leaves the panel while preserving its draft.

  3. Press P to preview before choosing a lifetime. O replays the original and S stops. Proposed preview resolves the example with current rules and captured context; it does not apply the draft to live feedback.
  4. Press m or RET on What should match. Facts, states, events, and occasions are marked Included or Excluded. All included conditions must match; excluded conditions are ignored, not forbidden. The captured or simulated example’s facts are not editable, but can be selected as conditions. Opening criteria preserves existing selections; extra facts start excluded.

A mail action of select describes the operation producing feedback, not selection in this editor. Include that action, or an event such as operation failed, to restrict the rule. RET toggles each criterion. Excluded criteria remain available to restore. Excluding with state unread while retaining with role field, with field kind authors, and the Notmuch integration matches authors in both read and unread messages. Keep at least one criterion. The parent row summarises the match; m collapses the criteria. These conditions govern matching items, not one document object.

A shell example may match "Items from the shell integration, in shell mode, during navigation, and with text style comint highlight prompt." The text style names the Emacs face used to display that text.

  5. Press l for How long: source-buffer lifetime, this Emacs session, or a saved personal rule. A buffer rule affects every matching item in that buffer. Review target, change, criteria, and lifetime together.
  6. Press a or C-c C-c to apply or save. e opens the prepared rule in the Advanced editor. At the top, q hides the guided draft. Resume it through C-e H p d, which opens the retained draft in its owning editor. Aborting a choice or leaving before Apply does not change live rules. Failed saves retain the draft and report failure.

Replacing or suppressing a sound targets its identity in a before- or after-content phase while retaining other components. Existing rule data can insert only at a phase’s beginning or end, so replacing a middle component asks which edge to use and includes that placement in the summary. Ambiguous components require the Advanced editor. Current-item changes recheck their captured source; a changed or killed target must be inspected again. Historical changes remain tied to the selected record.
