8.9.5 Walkthrough: Keep An Installed Voice Experiment

Create reading-demo as in Make a personal reading palette, or deliberately choose an existing personal destination. Note the active palette and whether selection follows the standard baseline or is explicit. Saving into an existing destination changes that resource; it is not preview-only practice.

  1. In the voice browser, open t, adjust a field, and preview with P~/~B. Press w to keep it.
  2. Select the personal destination and named voice bolden. Choose Physical voice and adjustments — this choice, then Add as preferred. This places the experiment first while retaining alternatives.
  3. The common editor opens an unsaved proposal. Expand Fallbacks: the new first choice is customised, preceding previous explicit choices. P plays the whole proposed voice; inspect its actual reported engine/voice because an unavailable preference may fall back.
  4. w saves and applies. Wait for its result and follow Recovering Unfinished Changes after partial saving or failed application. Success selects the destination for this session. Use U in Voice Palettes only to choose it for startup too.
  5. Before saving, undo or discard to reverse. After saving, reopen the voice, expand fallbacks, choose Remove in the added row’s RET action menu, preview, and save. Other choices and shared tuning remain. To restore session selection, use f in Voice Palettes if you originally followed the standard baseline; otherwise activate the recorded explicit palette.

For independent fallback tuning, open its menu and Customize this voice. Change one field, audition that row, then test Play whole fallback chain. The custom field overrides shared tuning only for that choice. i restores inheritance; reordering carries adjustments with the row.
