8.2.1 Listen without changing settings ¶
This exercise previews an installed voice without changing saved settings.
Start in an ordinary working buffer so the menu has a source to return to.
- Press C-e H v b to open the engine browser through Voices and engines.
- Select an available engine and press v to list its voices. RET on an
Omnivox engine opens its status, downloads, and settings instead.
- Move to an available voice and press P to hear a sample. S stops it.
- Use q to return through the browser’s parent views to Voices and
engines. Once back in the menu, C-q closes the menu sequence. The
original buffer remains your working context.
Browsing and previewing save nothing. A downloaded but inactive voice may
need enablement and Apply before it can be sampled; choose an already available
voice for this first exercise. If an engine is unavailable, its details explain
